No Sound After Pressing Play? Check the Player, Tab, and Output
A practical way to find out why browser work music is silent after you press Play, using WorkMusic controls, tab mute, and your device output.
If you pressed Play and heard nothing, look at the player before changing your computer settings. Does WorkMusic's button turn into Pause? If it does, check mute and your audio output. If it stays on Play, first check whether playback could start at all. These are different problems.
If the button stays on Play
Wait a moment for the track to load, then try the Play button once more. WorkMusic's current track-library player loads a mood's track list and starts a browser audio element before it marks the mood as playing. That means a missing connection or an unavailable track can stop playback before the control changes. Try another mood while connected to the internet. If neither starts, reload the page once and try again. This is a diagnostic, not a claim that switching moods repairs a failed connection.
MDN explains that an audio element's play request can fail; a successful click alone is not proof playback began. Browsers can also block audible automatic playback before you interact with the page, as MDN's autoplay guide describes. Pressing Play yourself is the appropriate first test. If it still fails after that, do not assume the problem is always autoplay. If the button says Pause but you hear silence
WorkMusic has its own mute toggle. After starting a mood, pressing M toggles it. If you know you muted the music earlier, press M again. On a different page, WorkMusic's small player also shows a Mute or Unmute button. Do not press M blindly several times; each press reverses the current state.
Then check whether your browser tab is muted. In Firefox, the tab's speaker control and menu can mute or unmute an individual tab. Other browsers may put this control somewhere else. A player can be running while its tab is silent.
Finally, check the destination for sound. On a Mac, open Sound settings and inspect Output. Apple's guide shows how to choose between built-in speakers, wired devices, and available wireless outputs. Headphones that were just disconnected are a good reason to check this before changing the music.
A short isolation test
Play audio from another site through the same browser and output device. If that is silent too, inspect device volume and output first. If it works, return to a WorkMusic mood, confirm the tab is unmuted, and try a second mood. Note which mood and browser you used if the problem persists. That observation is more useful than guessing whether a tab, network request, or device caused it.
WorkMusic records when a mood starts playing, but that event cannot tell us whether sound actually reached your headphones. This checklist diagnoses what you can observe; it does not promise a fix for every audio setup.
