Can Your Team Hear Your Work Music When You Share Your Screen?
A practical check for Google Meet and Zoom: when screen sharing carries computer audio, and how to keep a personal soundtrack out of the call.
Your headphones do not decide what a screen share transmits. The meeting app's audio-sharing option does. Before a presentation, check the share dialog, not just your headset volume.
In Google Meet, the thing you share matters
Google Meet's presentation instructions say that sharing a Chrome tab shares that tab's audio by default. If your focus music is playing in a separate tab, sharing only your slide tab is different from presenting the music tab. When sharing a window or the entire screen, Meet can also send system audio if you enable Also share system audio in the selection dialog. Google notes that meeting controls and device settings can vary, so read the dialog each time.If you need colleagues to hear a demonstration, share the specific tab containing that demonstration. If they should hear only your voice, leave system-audio sharing off and do not select the music tab. A dry run with a colleague is worth more than guessing from your own headphones.
Zoom has a separate computer-sound choice
Zoom's guide to sharing background music or computer audio describes an explicit way to send computer audio into a meeting. Do not enable that option for a routine screen share if your personal music should stay personal. If you do intend to play audio for the group, tell them first and test what they receive.Microphone pickup is a different path: a laptop mic may hear speakers in the room even when computer audio sharing is off. Headphones reduce that particular risk, but they cannot override a share setting that deliberately sends system audio.
A pre-call check that takes less time than an apology
- Pause the music while choosing what to share, then inspect the audio toggle.
- Share one work tab or window rather than your whole screen when possible.
- Resume music in your own headphones only after confirming the share source.
- If unsure, keep music paused for the call. Never use a confidential call as the test.
